Hollywoodland

Hollywoodland

"Hollywoodland" was painted for my 2009 solo exhibition at the gallery ELEVEN in London. It is a valentine to my birthplace, Los Angeles, and to Southern California in general where I grew up. I drew from classic orange crate label design (I have a collection of labels), and Hollywood history. Before moving to New York in 1988 I lived at ParkLaBrea, located within walking distance of the La Brea Tar Pits which are featured prominently in the foreground along with California's state flower, the Golden Poppy and Los Angeles' flower, the Bird of Paradise. Other Hollywood landmarks appear in the distance, including Graumann's Chinese Theater, the Capitol Records Tower, the Griffith Observatory and the original "Hollywoodland" sign, which was built in 1923 to advertise a real estate development. The original painting measures 36 x 36 in. and is in a private New York collection.

This limited edition print measures 24 x 24 in. (image size) with a 2 inch border.
